AFL news 2022: Former Collingwood player Shannon Cox throws punches in carpark brawl

Former Collingwood player Shannon Cox was reportedly embroiled in a vicious brawl at a local footy game on the weekend, with police investigating the ugly incident.

In footage obtained by The West Australian, the 36-year-old is seen wildly swinging punches with another man outside Geraldton’s Recreation Ground.

A group of onlookers, including families and children, jeered as the men attacked each other, with someone yelling “nail that c***”.

Another person in the clip climbed onto a car and inexplicably pulled his pants down.

According to the report, no one has been charged after Saturday’s incident, but WA Police are continuing to investigate.

Meanwhile, the Great Northern Football League has told The West Australian it is also investigating the ordeal.

It’s the latest in a series of ugly incidents in the West Australian footy competition — last month, former Western Bulldogs player and Brigades coach Jayden Schofield was banned for 10 weeks following an on-field brawl.

Cox, who played 25 games for Collingwood from 2007 to 2009, was representing Rovers in a GNFL preliminary final against Railways.

Rovers won the match by 24 points, with Dylan Curley and captain Gabriel Parfitt both contributing three goals in the 12.11 (83) to 8.11 (59) triumph.

They will face the Brigades in Saturday’s grand final at the Country Builders Stadium.

Elsewhere on Saturday, an outback footy grand final triumph was all but spoiled after a “disgraceful” display of abuse following the final siren.

The incident, which has left administrators “appalled”, kicked off just moments after the Katherine Camels claimed a 29-point victory over the Ngukurr Bulldogs in the Northern Territory’s Big Rivers Football League Grand Final.

A video online shows a group of spectators swarm the field.

While it is unclear exactly what started the incident which has been described online as a “riot”, the video shows Camels players and referees to be the apparent targets of the spectators’ rage.
