The 2016 Emmy Award Nominations Have Been Revealed
The nominations for the 68th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards were announced earlier today, and, unsurprisingly given the recent conclusion of its biggest season to date, Game of Thrones has come out on top, receiving a grand total of 23 nominations, the most nominations for a single show this year. Along with multiple nominations for Veep and Silicon Valley, Game of Thrones helped to make HBO the most nominated network this year, receiving a total of 94 nominations.
Last year Game of Thrones set the record for most Emmy Awards won in a single season, with 12 wins including the top award of the night for Outstanding Drama Series, but could be set to break their own record this year.
It’s great news for the women of Game of Thrones, too, with stars Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryan), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) all receiving a nod in the acting categories this year. Maisie, who is the only one of the three who had never been nominated for this accolade before, expressed her excitement on Twitter.

While all the nominations are much deserved, we can’t help but feel that Lena Headey’s Emmy for her portray of the deliciously evil Cersei is long overdue the Emmy it deserves!
The men of Game of Thrones have reason to be happy, too, with Peter Dinklage being nominated once more for his role as Tyrion, a role he won for last year, and Kit Harrington for his portrayal of Jon Snow, and guest star Max Von Sydow even scored a nomination for his brief tenure as the Three Eyed Raven! Directors Jack Bender and Miguel Sapochonik were nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for their work on Game of Thrones episodes The Door and Battle of the Bastards, respectfully.
FX’s The People Vs OJ Simpson scored 22 nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series and acting nominations for its stars Cuba Gooding Jr, Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, John Travolta, David Schwimmer and Sterling K. Brown.
New show Mr. Robot picked up a number of nominations, including one for its lead actor Rami Malik, while Emmy veterans Modern Family scored yet another nomination in the Outstanding Comedy Series category, plus Comedy Acting Nominations for Ty Burrell.
Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for his role in the Sherlock Christmas Special, and Ellie Kemper for her leading role in the Netflix Original Series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Last years winner Viola Davies is the favourite out of all the nominees in the Outstanding Lead Actress category, and the incomparable Dame Maggie Smith was once again nominated as Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role in Downton Abbey.
The Late Late Show with James Corden scored a nomination for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, and Adele Live in New York City for Outstanding Variety Special.
